A Peak Into The Hermit's Lair: Inception & Transgression.

[Review of 'Whisperings from the Void: The Amaranthine Arcanum of Holy Image and Revealed Exegesis',
from Patrick John Larabee. -- By G. McCaughry (Anathema Publishing) - MMXII]

Introduco:
How does one quantify personal experience? - Well, somehow, 'Whisperings from the Void: The Amaranthine Arcanum of Holy Image and Revealed Exegesis', Patrick John Larabee's first published manuscript in the form of a whole book (courteously released via Aeon Sophia Press), attempts and aims at answering this sempiternal question and proposes a thorough and undeniable observation concerning that which is the Witch's only true salvation and key motto; in essence, the Ways, Wants and Woes of the Wayfarer treading the Hermitical Path of Mysteries... And Mr. Larabee does so with the care and attention of a true believer, or better yet an astute student and researcher.

'Whisperings from the Void' is not a Grimoire per se, even if there is enough Gnosis within to readily constitute various components of a Greater Grimoire (perhaps in time?). The crux of the oracles here-presented speaks about the results of various devotional operations/prayers and is an authentic outlook into the Magickal Arte, moreso a direct and heartfelt access into one's own private praxes and syncretic relation with the Wyrds of Umbris.

In many ways 'Whisperings...' stand as an initiatory/introductory work into the Arte, however, some parts are clearly meant for those already in the "Know", as some invocations will often not be accompanied by any explanatory texts, forcing you to experiment on your own instead.

|||

'Book I: Hermitus Pathos', is in itself a motivator, oiling the engine of the Adept and sparking the Flame; with invigorating essay-like texts and litanies helping us to renew with the Arte and generate deeper interest, therefore helping us remember why we came to answer The Calling in the first place, realizing the potential lying dormant inside, and supporting our very foundations and layers as Will-full Individuals.

In Mr. Larabee's words:

A huge emphasis has been put on the role of the "I" within the Cosmic Order and the Demiurgic Schema, and thus what constitute our Inner and Upper Self, as a reflection from behind the Void's ghastly shroud. The fascination for the "Eye" throughout the Book is another indicator that the words offered within aren't plainly spell'd to be read but are purposely meant for us to "see" & "behold".

Simply put, the book doesn't need to take you by the hand to show you the (or a) way to go about the Path. It rather opens a door and lets you in for a peak, leaving you wanting more. (If you catch my drift.) There is no pretension to educate here, nor even a deliberate attempt at any spiritual guidance really, so long as the Absolute portrayed within these pages remains apparent and flowing seamlessly out from the various texts and illustrations. (The illustrations, by the way, are honestly wonderful.)

Texts of particular interest within Book I., to my own humble opinion, are: “Seeing the Unseen: being beyond the self: The Eye of the I” (also featured in PILLARS I - “Psychopompos”), “The Emanation and Inheritance of the Sorcerous-Fire”, “Corpus-Cask of the Dynamically Aqueous Soul” (love the title!), “And the Shadow is cast...”.

* I think I may have this one inked as a tattoo someday...

|||

'Book II: Libra Ab Sanguis' truly stand as a monumental acknowledgement of both the Spirit of Truth and the Truth-in-Spirits, of the HolyMost-"I" and of Mother Nature combined, and it is an especially vivifying pact of devotion, for care has been put into every small poetic oraisons and I am glad this "part" made it whole into 'Whisperings...'. (The "Invokations of the Watchtowers of the Universe" are especially poignant.)

This, is a work of close-proximity, I'd even say intimacy, as if this work is at arm's length in terms of accessibility, being of malleable and adaptable content, which is somehow contre-courant to certain books focusing more on astral soaring and ascent, this one has instead, a more terrene and solemn overall tone.

Of the numerous pictographs:

In many ways this tome could also serve as an artist's portfolio (in this case the author's). Mr. Larabee's sigil work is always very-well woven together, cohesive and stunning by the effectiveness as you can literally feel the energy speeding through them. Given, his artistic style and fashion may not be to everyone's taste, but it is certainly always on-point and moreso exude a tangible passion for the portrayed Daimon and its concordant seal. There is a certain innocence of character in the way he goes about his drawing and painting, and I mean that in the best possible way, for here Innocence is synonymous with Purity; a style untainted by the popular way most come to expect the Veiled Masters to be depicted.

My personal coup-de-coeur certainly goes for the various sigils and illustrations done for the 'Book of Emanations' ('Book II: Libri Ab Sanguis', of 'Whisperings...'), to me,  they are the most evocative pieces within The Book; actual, embodied manifestations of the Dark Shadows-Made-God since times immemorial, and are very powerful symbols in-deed.

|||

Conclusio:
I started this review, or rather mere stating of facts (albeit from a subjective standpoint), with a Question and I shall try to conclude by suggesting an answer, or perhaps a hypothesis. - There is no need to neither quantify nor qualify personal experiences. Nor is there any actual obligation when it comes to the sharing of these. But when One goes about to let the words bleed honesty on paper, the cautious reader should definitely pay attention, for this is a rare gift nowadays.

This offering from Patrick J. Larabee is a balm on the Souls walking the Path of Revelations, barefooted on the burning ambers of the charred and dying presumption that a book of such magnitude shouldn't be an enjoyable and easy reading from the get-go.

On a slightly bitter note, I wouldn't be honest with myself if I would not mention that one thing that kind of marred the reading experience at times, is the sheer amount of typos throughout the book. Of course, there is always a lot of these getting left behind in any books, but I guess a more thorough review of the manuscript first could've easily prevented the ones I noticed from making it into the final printed version. Same goes with the handling of some of the technical graphic specifications needed to be observed when including images that are bound to go to print. (Such as to include illustrations at a high enough resolution to make sure it doesn't come out pixelated or not "sharp" enough.) - I believe the actual size of the book itself isn't the best of choice when it comes to format, for me, it is simply too large, which makes for a slightly difficult handling when reading and forcing a bigger typefont size that I would have normally deemed fitting for such a book.
(Also, some of the Illustration's names are sorely missing from the List of Illustration at the end of the book... strange?)

It is my most sincere hope, to a fellow occultist and friend, to see this tome soar past the first edition and thus see it eventually revitalised with some of the technical aspects of the product itself, enhanced and rectified. But despite these few flaws, 'Whisperings from the Void' is a strong and solid first entry in the domain.

The Hermetic Realms are indeed vast, and Mr. Larabee, with his 'Whisperings from the Void', proves that an additional soldier-soul in the foray against the ignorant minds of our time trying to shield the Many against the Truth delivered by the Few, is always a very welcomed present for us all who are genuinely interested in the matter.

Gratitude & Benison.
-G. McCaughry

'Tracing the Solitary Path' A review of "Whisperings from the Void".

Tracing the Solitary Path

Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold

A Review of: Patrick John Larabee: Whisperings from the Void (Aeon Sophia Press, 2012)

‘Whisperings from the Void’ is a revelation through words, images, hymns, prayer and rituals in honour of the Lonely Road, a testimony of how gnosis and enlightenment can be found in isolation and solitude, amidst the denizens of the healing bush and poison apple, within the void and the winds of night.

It is an intimate and philosophical text constantly questioning the very substance of being, nothingness, soul and spirit that in its exegesis takes the shape of a Valentinian revelation colored with the gestalts of our fragmented and constantly recreated worlds and our perception of these worlds as we see, watch, feel and enter into communion with the other side on the wings of dream and the lone sojourner’s ecstasy.

Central for the book is the quintessence of magic as revealed in leaps and states of dream congress with the otherness along the via negativa. It is the void and nothingness that is the womb and tomb for the possibilities enacted in the sensorial and ensouled body adorned by spirit. It is the void that is conceived as beginning and therefore affirmation of all that is by a constant reference to transformation.

A recurring theme in the book is the meditations upon the nature of the soul. These meditations turn from contemplations of the soul in light of the Aristotelian soul as the life-giving power to a thing, to seeing the soul as dream proper. By presenting such meditations and paradoxes Larabee is constantly accepting and deconstructing not only the soul, but also key concepts in the book, such as ‘dream’, ‘void’, ‘flesh’, ‘awareness’, ‘senses’ -  and in this the book turns into an exercise and testament-giving word to the constant transmutability of the ensorceled witch.

The one constant in the book, the pole and anchor that transformation dances around and within is the ‘I’ – the Self as revealed through its self awareness. It is this perpetual constant that is the axis that enables understanding and knowledge for the transformation of perception, meditation and experience throughout the book. As Larabee writes: “We so often believe that we are the same being all of the time, but this is not the truth, for we are ever-changing sentient entities that are constantly in flux, every moment adapting to both our inner and outer realities.” (p.55)

All this must be brought into unity – and unity is not a Self defined by categories and forms – but a still centre of reflection and understanding that enables interaction within the worlds that are in a constant transformation.
Larabee is cunningly describing the apparent duality of the world, and sees this as something that must be subject for unity by a dual acceptance of the world of clay and the world of spirit – it is only here the soul can be at peace and cling to the axis of ‘I’. As he writes:

“Here though it must be stated that we are each capable of containing both heavens and hells, that when we reach into the heavens of our own selves we must also reach down into our own self created hells; we each are a legion of demons and angels and we are constantly at work within this battlefield of the mind, of the soul, there is never a cessation of this inner turmoil, whether positive or negative.” (p 22/23)

This constant turmoil is experienced as fragments, parts of a yet unknown whole that must be brought together. Larabee sees this as crucial to the Lonely Wanderer, and this also implies making peace with the world of profane reality as much as the ideal world where spirits more pure reign. The Solitary Witch is in a constant exile – and it is perhaps because of this acceptance of exile the perception of the Witch is often so different and often provocative for the mundane world. As he writes: “Exile is both a blessing and a curse, in that through it we are placed outside of the boundaries of the world as we know it, yet it is this very placement that gives exile its power, its purpose.” (p.32)

It is the exile itself that enables the establishment of the ‘I’ because exile forces one to look at the axis from the outside… and this leads to the following conclusion, that: “The Man of Spirit lives within the spiritual moment, the ever-present, becoming, the Eternal Now; which is the vertical-axis which intersects the horizontal-plane of manifest reality.” (p.73)

The second part of the book is ritualistic in nature as it details and suggests ways of spirit congress through soul travel and the placement of the sensorial body as the ritual field in the Eden of the Witch gods and goddesses. The Compass and crossroad are used as points of entrance both to the spirits of the land, the Mighty Dead and the wielders of witchblood.  In this, the Dream Sabbath becomes the metastasis of ‘I’ and is resurrected into a perpetual possibility that turns the lonely road crowded with spirits from all possible kingdoms and the route towards Self.

The book concludes with a series of invocations to sixteen faithful gods and goddesses that encircle the ‘I’ and this retinue is given as: Hekate, Qayin, Lucifer, Lilith, Samael, Rahab-Tiamat, Baphomet, Tubal Cain, Naamah, Mahazhael, Lilis, Janus, Ruha, Azazel, Lucifera, Asmodeus, all of them with deep and thick ties to witchblood proper.

‘Whisperings from the Void’ is a companion for the Witch on the Lonely Road, it is an exegesis on themes of grave importance to the exile and it is a constant meditation on the nature and substance of the ensorcelled Self or ‘I’. As such Patrick John Larabee has given from his soul a testimony of the hooks and crooks of the path that should be read with care and received in gratitude – especially for the Solitary sojourner.

There is a distinct sense of generosity in ‘Whisperings from the Void’, a desire to share and not to overwhelm, which gives this book a beauty in its nakedness that by itself makes this testimony of the Solitary path worthy and good!

QLIPHOTH 'Opus 1' review by Rob Wyatt

Qliphoth Vol. 1 "The Awakening" (Atavistic Path)

This new journal from Aeon Sophia (First edition of 111 exemplars) sold out almost immediately, but a second edition is due very soon. A very interesting cross section of practioners and indeed practices are represented herein. It would be folly to attempt to present a review of this journal as each individual work of its contents, because what appeals and calls out to me will not necessarily represent the reflection of what appeals to another. Therefore I can only say that I would most certainly recommend it.

Many Occultists are represented here, some more well known than others, but all the works within feel like they have a place here. Edgar Kerval has brought together a fascinating collection and should be commended for this as should Aeon Sophia for the support of such works. Many of the works herein may not fit into your personal path precisely, but the point is they contain interesting ideas and mystique that can and will inspire new ideas and directions that could and would enhance your particular route.

A cd is also included which in parts reminds me of En Nihil and Soliloquy For Lilith era Nurse with Wound. For those not familiar, it's a brooding dark ambient soundscape that could perhaps fit ritual work very well. Later on the sounds vary into more tribal and then industrial sounds, but all in all a very good CD with some very interesting tracks.

As an entire package this is a fine start to a journal that will be well worth keeping track of. If you don't already own this you most likely should consider buying a copy before a second edition passes you by. Support for occultists sharing their ideas and support for a promising publisher that is working hard to release works that will help shape the future of all of our paths has to be beneficial to every one of us.

New author and publication announcement!

Usually we prefer to launch and promote a single title at a time. This to avoid confusion by our fans, friends, customers and those new to our small publishing-house about forth coming books. This time, we got introduced to an author and his works we simply couldn’t let it pass by.

His name is Vadge Moore.

In 2009 Vadge published his first book Chthonic: Prose & Theory. Soon after Vadge joined the Voudonic Gnostic group La Societe Voudon Gnostique. Vadge’s writing also appears in the first journal of this group,” Atua: Voices from La Societe Voudon Gnostique”.

Forthcoming book is a very limited edition of 50 copies, clothbound hardcover version of his first book ‘Chthonic: Prose & Theory’.

More info and announcements and pre-order will be made within the coming weeks.

Thank you Edgar and Robert + QLHIPOTH Esoteric Publication

QLIPHOTH Esoteric Publication 'Opus I' is a collaboration of Edgar Kerval and Robert Dalla Valle.

Together they founded a creative platform which serves as an outlet for their esoteric & occult art, books, ideas and practices.

QLIPHOTH and all other publications will be executed under the umbrella of Edgar's and Robert's foundation. The name under which their creativity will come forth will be revealed very soon!

QLIPHOTH is entirely the work of Edgar and Robert. They collected the written works and did the lay-out. The initial idea was to make a very limited edition home-made Do-It-Yourself 'cut & paste' kind of magazine. In the meantime Aeon Sophia Press was approached with the question if we would want to do a 'European' version of QLIPHOTH....an offer we logically could not refuse and quickly embraced the project and with the same speed we set everything into motion the get QLIPHOTH printed.

Edgar and Robert were soon to find out that Aeon Sophia Press is a new and tiny publishing house who put forth every effort to get the job done.

With limited graphic-design skills Edgar did the complete lay-out! He kept it simple and managed to create a lay-out that serves it's purpose well. Which is very impressive for someone who never worked with such software before!

QLIPHOTH Esoteric Publication 'Opus I' is almost sold out. There are now approx 10 copies still available.

Aeon Sophia Press would like to thank Edgar and Robert for giving us the oppertunity to publish QLIPHOTH. Aeon Sophia Press is honored and gratful to be included in this awesome journey created by Edgar and Robert! We're very much looking forward to publish new stuff. :)

We would also like to thank EVERYONE who ordered a copy of QLIPHOTH. Your support means alot to us! This kind of dedication by our supporters makes it possible for small beginning publishers such as Aeon Sophia Press to be able to continue to publish more beautiful and interesting works.

Thank you.

Whisperings from the Void: The Amaranthine Arcanum of Holy Image and Revealed Exegesis.

"From Thy Forked Tongue speak thy Gnosis from  Starry Heaven made,
and here cast down the Secret Seraph's Flaming Blade."

"Whisperings from the Void: The Amaranthine Arcanum of Holy Image and Revealed Exegesis'' consists of two books that are connected by various threads of thought and philosophy, emotion and praxis, devotion and gnosis. Though sundered, they do united become whole; the force and the form of a path straying between the realms of night and day.

In many ways this work entire must be considered ‘liminal’ in that it inhabits a space betwixt: between the auspices of writ and limn and so too of the peripheries of waking and dreaming, leading beyond worlds of spirit and of the flesh in order to issue forth from a domain of devotion and praxis, Balance and Beauty, the gnostic revelation of Lux Veritas.
Amidst all this is also featured the artwork series ‘Hermit Pathos’: 12 full page renderings, representing various concepts not readily identifiable through the conventions of articulated word, as well as a collection of sorcerous sigils acting as Keys to the world existent beyond all which is scribed: to bypass the filters of conscious mind via symbol, ordaining the opening of the gateways to the unseen and unconscious self to pour through into our world and behold the shadow-realm with eyes of pure light.

"On another level, purely visionary one could say, there exists within us an ‘eye’ of sorts, not just any eye but a Spiritual Eye, that sees and beholds ALL. It resides in the deepest parts of ourselves and yet never ceases to watch, to observe, to look out as well as within.  This Eye could be said to be the equivalent of the Third-Eye, the Ajna, the source of what has over time become know as the ‘Second-Sight’, it is via this inner ability to see both the seen and the unseen that we experience visions, partake of the Imaginal worlds, and have the ability to ‘see’ into other worlds, other dimensions. It through attuning this Spiritual Eye through various means such as occult praxis and meditation, rites and rituals, devotion and hard work that we start to open up to the invisible worlds around us, to actually hear the Voices of the Gods and Spirits, and to partake of that Grander Vision of the Universal and Infinite Godhead."

~ BOOK II ~

Book II: The Book of Blood- A treatise of prose serving to describe by various means the Path and Praxis of the Sorcerous Arte: containing prayers, devotionals, rites and modes of Praxis which commit to explaining in detail particular aspects of ritual and spirit-congress, including but not limited to: icons and invocations unto the Masculine and Feminine aspects of the Godhead through various masks called herein the Holy Sorcerous Daemonic Host; those Devils and Angels of the Arte otherwise known as the Intelligences who preside as Patrons of the Dark Arte: a path trampled through the Lands of Nod, those Dreaming Worlds of the Soul leading to the Spiritual fountain of Wisdom.
As a collective of work based upon profound personal experience and dedication to the very Gods typified within, we once more bear witness to the same dynamic fusion of prose and art which includes a series of invocations and sigillic accompaniments pertaining to each God and Goddess by which the complete manifestation of Libri ab Sanguis is intended as presented here through a succession of mystery-rites.

Biography of Patrick John Larabee:

"I am an artist and writer who seeks to bring to light the Mysteries of the Darkness through Image and Word, Rite and Praxis. I wish to share the Knowledge of the Heart of the Soul in Love with the All. I seek to depict the place where the Soul meets Body, the In-Between Realm where the Flesh and the Spirit co-mingle to create the Dreaming: the Vast Projections of the All-Luminous and Darkly-Burning Self. What I give is a distillation of Mystic Experience, a Retort-full of the Heavenly Gnostic Numina; a Gift from the Holy Sorcerous Daemonic Host: the Gods and Spirits of the Witch-Blood, to us, the Children of the Serpent."
